I have just purchased a nvidia shield with a view to using it as a 1 stop shop for all viewing including netflix amazon tv via the tuner dvr and to run as a plex server. Can download though they disappear once downloaded or at least i cant find them and they are not appearing in the qnap file i have created for the downloads. I knew 4k would be a little bit to ambitious but i hoped 1080p would be an easy excercise for the qnap nas and the shield.

To get around this when using plex we used the qnap to store the media while using a second device in our case the nvidia shield as the media server for all the transcoding needs. I would by the shield gen2 for my new 4k. You just need to make sure the nas you buy is capable of running a plex server and has a gigabit ethernet port. When using kodi on the shield everything works just fine and i can mount the shares so the problem has to be with the nvidia os.

It is a fantastic device for both gaming and streaming media however it arrives with pretty poor storage space and the answer to that is a nas server from synology or qnap.
